We don’t always appreciate the benefit of innovation in design as quickly as we might. The TaylorMade Stealth Irons contain a design evolution that will quite possibly change the design of all irons going forward.
Most golfers benefit greatly from irons that make it easier to get the ball up higher on approach shots. That creates longer ball flight and a steeper angle of descent providing more stopping power.
To deliver that benefit designers want to move mass from high to low. Drop the weight down to lower the CG and therefore increase launch. An obvious opportunity is to take weight from the upper toe because it’s both well above the center of gravity and it's a concentrated area of mass. A chunk of toe missing look weird and the sound and feel would be significantly impacted.
The Cap Back Design fills that negative space with an ultralight and good-looking carbon material. It also not only protects but improves the sound and feel.
Matt Bovee, Director of Product Creation for Irons says that:
“Switching to Cap Back Design is like a new starting line in the iron world. I view it in the same light as carbon faces in the driver category. Quite frankly, I don't see us ever reverting to a cavity back in the high-performance space. We know from a measurable standpoint that you have a faster face with a larger sweet spot, and we haven't degraded sound or feel. Thanks to toe wrap construction, we add a lower center of gravity in 2022 to improve launch."
If you think that making it easier to get the ball up and higher, together with forgiveness on imperfect ball striking would change your game, then leave us a contact and we’ll reach out and schedule a discussion and, if relevant, a fitting.
