Is enjoyment a weighty matter?

Weighty matters | Fitting & Technology

Are you looking for all three of: added consistency; improved accuracy; and greater distance? Wouldn’t that be nice? It might be a “weighty matter”.

To “feel” how weight impacts your swing, take 60 seconds and try the following.

Pick out your #7 iron and take a few swings. Now reverse the club, so you’re gripping the shaft just above the head, with the grip at the end where the clubhead usually is. Try a few swings now. Finally, pull out your #6 iron and grip it together with your #7 iron and take a few full swings.

“With this exercise, you’re playing around with ‘swing weight’ (the ratio of clubhead weight to butt end weight). It has a big impact on the swing speed you generate AND the rhythm of your swing. It can also influence your swing path. Try and create an ‘over-the-top’ swing with the 2 clubs together."

Better contact

There are lots of studies that show that by optimizing swing weight in your irons you can become one and two club lengths longer, with a better rhythm that promotes clubhead speed and a more consistent impact in the hitting zone.

Don’t “weight” for it

I know you’re not on tour but, if playing with a different swing weight or club weight could improve the performance of your ball striking, then you’d quickly become weighed down with a bag full of winnings, whose currency was enjoyment, passion, emotion, happiness and fulfillment.
